Art Courses in the Shed

NEW YEAR – NEW COURSES FOR 2018

Absolute Beginners Painting – Part 2 Acrylic 

A 6 week course

with Jayne Wallett

Thurs 10.30 – 12.30

8th March – 10th April

During this six-week course you will be introduced to painting with acrylics.

You will learn about;

Preparing a support; priming canvas, stretching cartridge paper, choosing suitable textured acrylic paper

Working with colour; mixing colours, tone values and blocking in colour.

Refining shape and shade. Detail and highlights.

The last session will be an introduction to oil painting and the difference between working with acrylic and oil paint.

 

Please bring a drawing board (A3) acrylic painting brushes if you have them (flat, bright or filbert brushes), and a palette (tear-off paper palettes, a piece of formica or a large flat white ceramic plate). A small container for water.

 

Paints, some brushes, canvas and paper will be provided.

 

Absolute Beginners Painting – Part 1 Watercolour

A 6 week course

In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will begin by learning basic watercolour painting skills and how to use a variety of materials, moving on to personal projects as your confidence grows.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

Course Structure

Week 1: Introduction to colour theory. How to choose the right brush. Paper; using watercolour and cartridge paper, stretching paper.

Week 2: Beginning to Paint. Using watercolour paints. Mixing colour. Making a watercolour wash.

Week 3: Painting Flowers and Plants. Harmony and complementary colour.

Week 4: Painting Landscape. Painting natural forms. Distance and foreground

Week 5: Painting Still Life. Composition. Texture and tone. Working within a chosen palette of colour

Week 6: Making it Personal – Style and subject.

Recommended materials List: (Cost about £40 – £55 depending which paints you buy)

Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour Sketchers’ Pocket Box (12 half pans) OR Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Set (24 half pans)
Pro Arte Prolene Series 101/106 Watercolour Brush Cass Exclusive set of 6. (These are synthetic brushes.)
A pad of A4 Cold Pressed Watercolour Paper (300gsm weight) Cass Art’s own brand would be fine.
Winsor & Newton Watercolour Art Masking Fluid.
An A3 wooden drawing board.
You will also need a water pot and paper towels.

 

 Please note that this course is for complete beginners only. If any one is interested in refreshing their painting skills, or has already done another class, we may be running suitable courses at a later date.

She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

The course runs on 19th, 26th Jan, and the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd Feb..

An introduction to making and binding your own books –  get creative and make a diary, journal, sketchbook, or re-bind a favourite novel. Try a variety of book binding stitches and techniques – and is designed with all abilities in mind.

Contemporary art can be a daunting experience for the newcomer, but when it’s put into context viewing can become more rewarding. This course aims to help uncover the meaning behind contemporary pieces through an exploration of the context,  reasons and thought processes behind them.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

The course is designed with all abilities in mind, and aims to leave you with an enhanced awareness of this important aspect of the art world.

 Week 1: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion: – How can the Art of the past help us to understand Contemporary Art?

Week 2: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion. – The ‘Isms’ – from Impressionism to Post Modernism.

Week 3: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion – Contemporary Art – 1970 – to 2016

Week 4: PT I: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 5: PT II: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 6: Bringing it all together – Review and reflection on the context of Contemporary Art.
