NEW COURSES FOR AUTUMN 2018

Introduction to Oil Painting

A 6 week course

with Jayne Wallett

Thurs 10.30 – 12.30

During this six-week course you will be introduced to painting with oils.

This course is suitable for beginners to painting, or for those with some experience of other media.

Course Structure

Week 1. Why oil paint? How to chose and prepare a support (canvas or panel). Brushes for oil painting. Drawing for painting.
Week 2. Working with a limited palette. Mixing oil colours. Under-painting.
Week 3. Sketching with oils.
Week 4 Blending and glazing. Oil painting techniques.
Week 5. Painting still life.
Week 6. Painting landscape.

We will also look at choosing the best frame for your work, and pricing your paintings.

The course will run on September 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, and October 4th, and 11th.

Equipment & Materials

You will need the following:

Water Mixable Oil Paints.
These are paints that can be diluted with water instead of solvent, and can be bought in a seteg Windsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour Studio Set 37ml (10 colours) £36.95 from www.cassart.co.uk or Talens Cobra Artist Water Mixable Oil Paint 40ml (10 colours) £45 from www.jacksonsart.com.

Or you could buy the paints separately (the prices of tubes vary because of the pigments used). A good palette would be: Titanium White, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Raw Umber.

Brushes – a set of oil brushes such as Cass Art Grey Synthetic Brushes for Acrylic & Oil Set of 6. £14.95 from www.cassart.co.uk.

Palette (either a plain ceramic plate, or tear off palettes such as Winsor & Newton Tear Off Palette : Medium 11 1/2 x 8in : 50 Sheets £7.30 from www.jacksonsart.com.)

Please bring a drawing board (A3), a container for water, paper towels and an apron or old shirt.

Canvas will be provided.

Drawing and Painting Portraits

A 6 week course

with Jayne Wallett

Thursdays 01:30  – 03:30

Course Structure
Week 1. The skull and the muscle structure of the head.
Week 2. Female model – making quick studies using charcoal and pencil. Form and tone.
Week 3. Making successful portrait drawings from photographs.
Week 4 Male model – Pastel portrait drawing.
Week 5. Female model – using watercolour and acrylic in portraits.
Week 6. Working from portrait studies.

This course is suitable for people with some confidence in drawing, wishing to improve their portraiture skills.

The course will run on September 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, and October 4th, and 11th.

Equipment & Materials

Please bring charcoal and white chalk pencils (eg Faber-Castell Goldfaber Charcoal Sketch Set from www.cassart.co.uk. £6.50) to the first session. Paper will be provided.

The fee for this 6 week course is £80 and includes tea and biscuits.

NB in addition there will be a small fee as payment for models for three sessions.

Art Workshop – MORNINGS

These 3-hour workshop sessions are for people who want to work on personal themes, to explore new techniques , or just improve their drawing or painting skills.

Suitable for those with some confidence in their art skills.

Absolute Beginners Drawing – AFTERNOONS

6 week course

If you have never drawn before, or were put off at school, this course is for you. In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will begin by learning basic drawing skills and how to use a variety of materials, moving on to more detailed drawings as your confidence grows.

Course Structure
Week 1. Learning to look. Starting to draw. Drawing with line
Week 2. Drawing volume. Introduction to perspective.
Week 3. Drawing natural forms.
Weeks 4 & 5. Working with tone, light and shade. Measuring your drawing.
Week 6. Personal project.

Equipment & Materials
You will need to bring a piece of board\wood to use as a drawing board size A3. For the first session, please bring an object that you would like to draw. Other materials will be provided

The course runs on September 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th. October 5th, 12th.

Absolute Beginners Painting – Part 1 Watercolour

A 6 week course

In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will begin by learning basic watercolour painting skills and how to use a variety of materials, moving on to personal projects as your confidence grows.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

Course Structure

Week 1: Introduction to colour theory. How to choose the right brush. Paper; using watercolour and cartridge paper, stretching paper.

Week 2: Beginning to Paint. Using watercolour paints. Mixing colour. Making a watercolour wash.

Week 3: Painting Flowers and Plants. Harmony and complementary colour.

Week 4: Painting Landscape. Painting natural forms. Distance and foreground

Week 5: Painting Still Life. Composition. Texture and tone. Working within a chosen palette of colour

Week 6: Making it Personal – Style and subject.

Contemporary art can be a daunting experience for the newcomer, but when it’s put into context viewing can become more rewarding. This course aims to help uncover the meaning behind contemporary pieces through an exploration of the context,  reasons and thought processes behind them.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

The course is designed with all abilities in mind, and aims to leave you with an enhanced awareness of this important aspect of the art world.

 Week 1: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion: – How can the Art of the past help us to understand Contemporary Art?

Week 2: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion. – The ‘Isms’ – from Impressionism to Post Modernism.

Week 3: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion – Contemporary Art – 1970 – to 2016

Week 4: PT I: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 5: PT II: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 6: Bringing it all together – Review and reflection on the context of Contemporary Art.
