Absolute Beginners

A 6 week course

In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will begin by learning basic drawing skills and how to use a variety of materials, moving on to personal projects as your confidence grows.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

Course Structure

‘Honesty’ by Jayne Wallett

Week 1. Learning to look. Starting to draw.

Week 2. Drawing with line. Measuring your drawing

Week 3. Working with tone, light and shade

Week 4. Introduction to colour

Week 5. Exploring materials. Starting on a personal project

Week 6. Personal project

Equipment & Materials

Students will need to bring a piece of board\wood to use as a drawing board size approx A3 297mm x 420mm, plus a bulldog clip to the first class.

They should also bring a small object from home that they would like to draw. All other materials will be provided in order to give students the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials.

Please note that this course is for complete beginners only. If any one is interested in refreshing their drawings skills, or has already done another class, we may be running suitable courses at a later date.

There are a range of appropriate books available to choose from in the shop

Course fee includes a range of materials, sketchbook & coffee and biscuits.

The course runs from 13.30 – 15.30 on Friday 21st, and 28th of April, and 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th May.

A six-week mixed ability course for people with some skill and confidence in drawing.

In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will build on your existing drawing skills, learn to use new materials and try new techniques.

The course runs from 10.30 – 12.30pm on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st of March and the 7th of April.

The fee for this 6 week course is £80 and includes coffee and biscuits.

An introduction to making and binding your own books –  get creative and make a diary, journal, sketchbook, or re-bind a favourite novel. Try a variety of book binding stitches and techniques – and is designed with all abilities in mind.
A basic bookbinding kit and course book are included in the course fee.

An Introduction to Contemporary Art

Contemporary art can be a daunting experience for the newcomer, but when it’s put into context viewing can become more rewarding. This course aims to help uncover the meaning behind contemporary pieces through an exploration of the context,  reasons and thought processes behind them.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

The course is designed with all abilities in mind, and aims to leave you with an enhanced awareness of this important aspect of the art world.

 Week 1: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion: – How can the Art of the past help us to understand Contemporary Art?

Week 2: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion. – The ‘Isms’ – from Impressionism to Post Modernism.

Week 3: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion – Contemporary Art – 1970 – to 2016

Week 4: PT I: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 5: PT II: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 6: Bringing it all together – Review and reflection on the context of Contemporary Art.

The course runs on 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th Sept and 7th and 14th Oct.
