If you have never drawn before, or were put off at school, this course is for you. In a friendly and encouraging atmosphere you will begin by learning basic drawing skills and how to use a variety of materials, moving on to more detailed drawings as your confidence grows. Materials provided.

The course runs on 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th Jan, and the 6th and 13th of Feb

These sessions are for people who would like to work on their drawing and try new techniques in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Begin or improve acrylic painting, watercolour, pen and ink. Bring your own materials

Drawing and Painting Portraits

A 6 week course

Course Structure
Week 1. The skull and the muscle structure of the head.
Week 2. Female model – making quick studies using charcoal and pencil. Form and tone.
Week 3. Making successful portrait drawings from photographs.
Week 4 Male model – Pastel portrait drawing.
Week 5. Female model – using watercolour and acrylic in portraits.
Week 6. Working from portrait studies.

This course is suitable for people with some confidence in drawing, wishing to improve their portraiture skills.

The course will run on September 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, and October 4th, and 11th.

Equipment & Materials

Please bring charcoal and white chalk pencils (eg Faber-Castell Goldfaber Charcoal Sketch Set from www.cassart.co.uk. £6.50) to the first session. Paper will be provided.

The fee for this 6 week course is £80 and includes tea and biscuits.

NB in addition there will be a small fee as payment for models for three sessions.

An introduction to making and binding your own books –  get creative and make a diary, journal, sketchbook, or re-bind a favourite novel. Try a variety of book binding stitches and techniques – and is designed with all abilities in mind.
A basic bookbinding kit and course book are included in the course fee.

The course runs on 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th Sept and 6th and 13th Oct

An Introduction to Contemporary Art

Contemporary art can be a daunting experience for the newcomer, but when it’s put into context viewing can become more rewarding. This course aims to help uncover the meaning behind contemporary pieces through an exploration of the context,  reasons and thought processes behind them.

This course is taught by Jayne Wallett M.A., who has been teaching art and design to adults and young people for more than 20 years. She is an illustrator, painter, printmaker and is passionate about drawing.

The course is designed with all abilities in mind, and aims to leave you with an enhanced awareness of this important aspect of the art world.

 Week 1: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion: – How can the Art of the past help us to understand Contemporary Art?

Week 2: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion. – The ‘Isms’ – from Impressionism to Post Modernism.

Week 3: Illustrated Lecture and Group Discussion – Contemporary Art – 1970 – to 2016

Week 4: PT I: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 5: PT II: Focus on 3 Contemporary Artists – influences, production and critical reception

Week 6: Bringing it all together – Review and reflection on the context of Contemporary Art.

The course runs on 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th Sept and 7th and 14th Oct.
