Screenwriting Course for the Industry – Fiction Film Features

A 10 week course with Sheryl Crown

Mondays  7.30pm – 9.00pm

10th Oct – 12th Dec

Everything you need to know about successful story structure and how the Industry works from an insider’s perspective.

This course is ideal for people with a a keen interest in movies, and a strong, original creative idea which they are ready to develop into a feature film script, people with a passion for cinema who want to know what the industry is really looking for.

Methodology will include the discussion of film, theoretical analysis of structural teaching points in film, reference to written texts & extracts, group discussion and individual presentations.

Course Structure

The course will comprise 10 weekly 1 and 1/2 hour seminars.

The course aims to broaden participant’s knowledge and understanding of how screenplays work,  to enable the development of skills in key aspects of screenplay writing and to offer access to Industry insights and needs.

Pre-selected movies will be viewed in the participant’s own time, and discussed during the seminar with additional clips to elaborate.

Students will have the opportunity to develop their own creative ideas in the context of a supportive group, and will undertake practical creative writing homework exercises related to their own project, to be reviewed by the group and tutor in the following week.

Student’s own screenplay project will be developed to full treatment,  and some sample scenes within the course with one to one tutorial feedback.

Pitching skills, the dynamics of how production and how the market works will also be explored.

 About the Tutor

This stimulating course will be delivered in association with Wivenhoe Bookshop by Sheryl Crown, a local Professional Film Producer and Development Executive, and  based on her accredited BA Hons module created for Essex University Film Studies Department. Most significantly the sessions are informed by her track record and hands on experience of over 25 years of working creatively with writers in Television Drama and Feature Film Development and Production. Sheryl’s Film credits include;-

Executive Producer of Brimstone, starring Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce which has been selected in competition for this year’s Venice Film Festival, and a special presentation at Toronto. Sheryl was also Executive Producer of Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales starring Selma Hayek, Vincent Cassel and Toby Jones, which was in competition in Cannes 2015.

Previous work includes Executive Producer of Miss You Already, starring Drew Barrymore, Toni Colette, Dominic Cooper and Paddy Considine, Executive Producer of the Oscar and Bafta winning Documentary Feature – Searching for Sugarman, and the sole Producer of the Oscar nominated Feature Solomon and Gaenor amongst many other Feature film and TV Drama credits.

Sheryl currently works full time as the Head of Development at New Sparta Films.

The course runs on 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st Oct, the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th Nov, 5th and 12th Dec.
