‘Time and Tide’, our forthcoming art show in the shed will feature Wivenhoe artists whose work is inspired by the town and it’s tidal river. The exhibition, which takes place on the 16th (Wivenhoe Regatta Day) and 17th June, includes work by Fiona Harmon, Ella Johnston and Melanie Whitehead.
Fiona Harmon’s assemblages use found materials from the banks of the Colne and other Essex waterways – driftwood, rusty metal, and broken boats. She says that “Each of these scraps have a history, a journey they have been on and they remind me of the shipbuilders, shipyards and sailors that used to be on the river.”
Fiona also works with oil on canvas, and has recently begun exploring linocuts.
She exhibits widely throughout Essex.
‘Lapwing’ by Ella Johnston
Ella Johnston’s artistic practice reflects a long-standing interest in nature and the visceral relationship humans have with plants and animals.
Her beautiful pen and ink bird drawings are inspired by classic botanical and 19th Century avian illustrative prints.
Ella trained in art and the history of art at Chelsea College of Art and the University of Essex. Her drawings have been shown in London, across the South East and in numerous publications over the past 17 years.
Melanie Whitehead will be exhibiting a series of Wivenhoe inspired images created using freehand embroidery.
She talks about her work here: “I love to explore new techniques and experiment with different materials in my work. My sewing machine has a ‘walking foot’ which enables me to use it like a pen and ‘draw’ on the fabric with thread.”
