September 2019 – Printworks

Autumn of Print both Craft and Crazy…

All through September Wivenhoe Printworks guests in the Bookshop’s ’Over the Sofa’ space with a display of new art prints in a variety of media both traditional and experimental.

‘Printworks’ is Wivenhoe’s collectively run hub where artists of all ages and skill levels can explore a range of traditional craft and experimental printmaking processes in a large and well-equipped studio space. Workshop members have access to studio space and this September sees the launch of a comprehensive programme of day, half-day and evening sessions catering for all skill levels from absolute beginners to experienced printmakers. New members are always welcome and there are free intro sessions for the print-curious to sample the facilities and cut through the jargon.

On show over the proverbial sofa this September will be a range of smaller works in a variety of media: traditional metal-plate etching, drypoint engravings, photo-stencil screen prints on paper and fabric, lino and woodblock printing together with free-style monoprints and collotypes where artists use mixed-media collages to create truly wild textures and images from natural materials and recycled scraps. There will also be some decidedly ‘off-the-wall’ work from the Thursday evening ’Kitchen Sink Print Lab’ sessions which in the past have included Lithography with Tinfoil and Coca-Cola, Perspex Engraving by Laser, and Etching your own Coins and Medals. The Kitchen Sink Print Lab will be staging a ‘Popup Print’ demo in the Bookshop backyard/shed during September… date to be confirmed on the Bookshop and Printworks websites later in August.

All works on display will be for sale at affordable prices and there will be free information about the range of techniques, courses and intro sessions, plus literature available about home-printing and opportunities for local groups to try out creative print without the need for expensive equipment.
