The Big Sleep is a must for noir fans, smoky, and stylishly shot with sharp, witty dialogue and sleek innuen
do. Anti-hero, detective Philip Marlowe is quickly plunged into a puzzle of pornography, drug abuse, gambling and murder – seven murders, to be precise.
The restrictions of the day meant that the film could merely hint at the depravity underlying the plot, but it is deftly done. The script is intelligently written, with acclaimed author William Faulkner among the screenwriters. The suggestive dialogue between Bogie and Bacall was considered racy for the time, and is still compelling to watch today.
Rachael Webster will be giving a talk, and answering questions, before the screening. Rachael teaches film at a local college, and her particular areas of interest are genre, and gendered films.
