Part II of a two part course with Dr Nicholas Joll

Part II: Singer to Schopenhauer

Sat 10.00 – 11.30

22nd Oct – 19th Nov

1    Singer on ethics

2    Sartre on bad faith

3    Benjamin on art & history

4    Adorno’s aphorisms

5    Schopenhauer on life

In this course we discuss a wide range of philosophical passages. No prior reading is required: in each session, the passages at issue will be distributed as handouts. Nor even is any prior acquaintance with philosophy necessary. A continental breakfast will, of course, be provided!

Questions at issue include the following. What is – or rightly counts as – entertainment? Is our engagement with the world primarily practical? Are thoughts really inside one’s head? Is technology neutral? What is at issue in the abortion debate? Is there something deep about ‘bad faith’? Does history have a direction? Do we need to rethink our ethics of life and death?

The fee for this 5 week course is £70 and includes the continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
