Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am

A course in two parts each of five weeks.
Tutor: Dr Nicholas Joll

Part 2: 19th March – 16th April

1 The world as I found it (Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre)

2 World-making (Kant, Goodman, Hacking)

3 Mind & meaning (Wittgenstein)

4 Art and ethics (Weil, Murdoch)

5 Induction (Hume, Goodman)

The philosophers featuring on this course are those who appear regularly in the Philosophy Breakfasts – and also include Simone Weil. The course presupposes no familiarity with philosophy or with the philosophers whom we will be reading. Sessions will proceed as follows – I will introduce the philosophers whom the session treats, and distribute passages by those philosophers (or, in at least one case, play an audio recording) for group discussion. There is no required reading (other than the passages themselves, which, as said, will be distributed during sessions). A continental breakfast will, of course, be provided! The fee for this 5 week course is £70 and includes the continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
