Part I of a two-part course

Even More Philosophical Passages: Positivism
Saturday 10.00 – 11.30 14th Jan – 11th Feb
Weekly topics:
1 Hume and early Wittgenstein |
2 Comte |
3 Ayer |
4 Carnap |
5 Neurath |
The course uses passages in order to consider the philosophical trend known as ‘positivism’ together with opposition to that trend. No prior reading is required: in each session, the passages at issue will be distributed as handouts. (I know of no book that would serve well as background – except perhaps the pictured book by Ayer; but there are plenty of relevant chapters, articles and encyclopaedia articles.) Continental breakfast will be provided.
Central issues include: to what does a statement owe its meaning? does knowledge have a foundation? is all knowledge scientific? what can philosophy do for ethics and for society? is there something wrong with metaphysics?
The fee for this 5 week course is £70 which includes a continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
